TE3N and Do Lafzoon Ki Kahani release at box-office today

It will be a battle between the Shahenshah of Bollywood and Sarabjit star Randeep Hooda at the box-office starting today. Amitabh Bachchan starrer TE3N is a clear front runner given the sheer screen numbers it has received over Do Lafzon Ki Kahani which opens on 800 screens. Eventually, in the longer run, the content and performances will determine the true winner.

TE3N brings together on screen three fine actors in the form of Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vidya Balan. The movie which is an official remake of a Korean film(surprisingly the makers have decided not to officially name the original film) is a whodunnit suspense drama woven around a septuagenarian played by Bachchan whose life is turned topsy turvy when his granddaughter is kidnapped. A search to find her proves futile. Eight years later another kidnapping and its modus operand brings the spotlight back on Bachchan’s granddaughter’s case. Bachchan joins forces with a priest(Nawaz) and a super cop(Vidya) as they set out to investigate the kidnappings. While the content has not been tinkered with as compared to the original Korean film, it will be the performances of Big B, Nawaz and Vidya that will make this a worthwhile watch.

Do Lafzon Ki Kahani will depend much on Randeep Hooda’s new found elevated star power courtesy Sarabjit. The actor who has been in his pink of form will be hoping for an encore after delivering a standout performance in Sarabjit. The movie is a remake of a Korean film and tells the story of an ex-boxer and his riveting love story for a blind girl. Randeep will be donning the boxing gloves for the movie while playing his blind romantic interest is Kajal Aggarwal who makes her return to Hindi films after long.

PM Modi's 7th Meeting With Obama Next Week. Here's The Agenda.

WASHINGTON:

HIGHLIGHTS

  1. Both countries finalising agreements for their militaries to work closely
  2. PM will address both houses of the US Congress, considered a rare honour
  3. They are expected to discuss India's desire to join the NSG

Next week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Washington as one of President Barack Obama's closest international partners.

President Obama invited PM Modi for one of the last big visits by a world leader before his term ends in January. Although the trip won't feature a lavish state dinner, the PM will address both houses of Congress, considered a rare honour.

This will be their seventh meeting since Mr Modi became Prime Minister in May 2014, an impressive tally for a US President and a leader who is not a formal ally, said Ashley Tellis at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington.

"The personal relationship between the president and the prime minister ... is really one of the unanticipated surprises of the past two years," said Mr Tellis, an expert on India.

The developing relationship is seen as an Obama foreign policy success. Washington views India as an important part of its rebalance to Asia and as a counterweight to China.

The two countries are finalising agreements that would make it possible for their militaries to cooperate more closely, and for US defence manufacturers to both sell and make high-tech weaponry in India.

A deal on logistics would govern issues such as how the two countries account for costs of military exercises. Another involves encrypted communications and geospatial data transfer.

Decades of non-alignment has, however, made New Delhi wary of an embrace by the more powerful United States, which has overtaken Russia as India's top arms supplier.

There are frustrations, too, on the US side.

The two countries reached a civil nuclear agreement in 2005, but it has yet to yield any contracts for US-based companies. Only now is Westinghouse, a unit of Japan's Toshiba, approaching the finish line on a deal to build six reactors in India.

The visit gives PM Modi a chance to network with US lawmakers who may feature in a Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton administration but, as it coincides with the California primary, he is not expected to meet either.

President Obama and PM Modi are expected to discuss India's desire to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), a 48-member club of nuclear trading nations.

India was shut out for decades because of its weapons programme, and the civil nuclear agreement with the United States gave it access to foreign suppliers without giving up its arms.

Mr Modi arrives in Washington on June 7 and leaves the United States on June 8.

UP clash: Mathura SP among 2 cops killed in standoff with ‘Netaji cult’

The clashes broke out when police were trying to evict illegal occupants of a land in Jawahar Bagh by activists, believed to be of Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik Kranti Satyagrahi, on the directions of the Allahabad High Court.

THEIR demands include the cancellation of elections for President and Prime Minister, replacement of rupee with ‘Azad Hind Fauj’ currency, and sale of 60 litres of diesel and 40 litres of petrol at Re 1 each.

But the bizarre case of a cult-like group of nearly 2,000 protesters, who claim to be the “true followers of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose”, took a deadly turn in Mathura Thursday with clashes that led to the killing of two police officers, including a Superintendent of Police, and injuries to at least six policemen.

The protesters allegedly started firing on a police team that reached Jawahar Bagh to clear the area after the Allahabad High Court ordered that acres of government land be reclaimed from the Swadheen Bharat Vidhik Satyagrahi.

According to police, members of this outfit and another smaller organisation, Swadheen Bharat Subhash Sena, had been staging demonstrations at Jawahar Bagh over the last two-and-a-half years. Among the other demands posted on their Facebook page are: “We demand all records relating to the ‘Ruler of the Nation’, law and order, and also the document of citizenship (which shows how we are citizens of the nation) to be made public.”

On Thursday, government officials and police reached the spot around 5 pm and used teargas initially before the protesters allegedly started firing back. According to Mathura police, two bullets hit Station Officer (Farah), Santosh Yadav, who was declared dead on arrival by doctors at Niyati Hospital. SP (City) Mukul Dwivedi, who was placed on ventilator support, succumbed to bullet injuries later, said doctors at the private hospital.

Station Officer (Sadar) Pradeep Kumar were among those who suffered bullet injuries on the chest, hands and head. “We are trying to identify the miscreants to lodge an FIR,” D C Mishra, IG (Agra Zone), told The Indian Express.

So far, police have been able to identify only one of the group’s leaders, Ram Vriksha Yadav, but have no further information about him or his associates. Police sources said a few of their colleagues were even held captive by the protesters for a while on Thursday. But, they added, police destroyed all tents erected by the protesters and bulldozed a wall at the park.

These activists were followers of Baba Jai Gurudeo and have named their outfit as ‘Swadheen Bharat Vidhik Satyagrahi’. They have occupied hundreds of acres of land at Jawahar Bagh on the pretext of holding a ‘dharna’ since more than two years. Even after several notices were served to them, they were not ready to leave the premises,” said Rajesh Kumar, District Magistrate, Mathura.

The Allahabad High Court had ordered the government land vacated months ago. These activists filed a PIL in the High Court, which dismissed their plea and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on them,” said Kumar.

Officials and witnesses said there had been tension in the area ever since the Mathura administration gave the protesters a 48-hour ultimatum on April 15 that lapsed without any action being initiated. On May 25, the administration made an unsuccessful attempt to evict the protesters.

Late Thursday night, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav ordered an inquiry into the incident to be conducted by the Divisional Commissioner (Agra).
